Well it was a super busy Summer and Fall here in the Family Table Treasures household! The Summer began quite fun with lots of traveling and even a destination wedding on the beautiful island of Bermuda! Once August hit though it was a different story. I came down with a terrible cold that I’m actually still battling! The good news is I am feeling better and I think I’ve finally turned a corner. I have been itching to get back to work here on the blog and I wanted to start back with something fun to celebrate! What better way than with a little magic?!
Over the Summer I made a Gravity Defying Beer Can Cake for a 21st Birthday celebration and I thought it would be nice to share something here that had an easier skill level that pretty much anyone could handle. These Gravity Defying M&M Cupcakes are truly a show stopper!
The first thing you need to do is decide what flavor cupcake you want to make. You can really make any flavor that you’d like but I’d stick with something basic like vanilla or chocolate. Keep things simple including your frosting technique. You want the focus to be on the illusion of M&M’s magically pouring onto your cupcake. I went with my simple Vanilla Cupcake recipe with Cream Cheese Frosting.
Once you have your favorite cupcakes baked it’s time to add the magic! Here are the items you’ll need to create your Gravity Defying M&M Cupcakes:
- Some mini M&M’s as well as fun sized packages of M&M’s.
- A 12 ounce bag of semi sweet chocolate chips
- A package of wooden coffee stirrers
- Cotton balls
I made enough to decorate a dozen cupcakes but if you plan on making more you may need more mini M&M’s.
Start by cutting the corner of each little bag of M&M’s that you need and empty each bag. You won’t be using these M&M’s in this recipe so you can put them in a little plastic baggy and save them for a midnight snack.
Place your mini M&M’s in a wide shallow bowl and set aside. Melt your semi sweet chocolate chips and place in a tall glass. Then place your coffee stirrers in another glass.
Dip one of the coffee stirrers in the melted chocolate to coat it leaving about 1 1/2 inches of the stirrer uncoated. Let excess chocolate drip off and then place on the M&M’s. Pick up the loose M&M’s and press them so they cover every part of your melted chocolate.
At this point you need to be patient and leave the coated stirrer in the M&M’s until the chocolate sets a bit. If you get impatient like I did you’ll end up with a clumpy mess like this!
It really should set quite nice in a about 4-5 minutes. At this point the chocolate should be hardened enough that you can move your stirrer to a parchment lined cookie sheet to finish setting.
Repeat until you have all your stirrers coated and then let them sit until completely set.
While you’re waiting for them to set you can start filling your M&M bags with cotton balls. This step isn’t completely necessary but it will help keep the bags more stable when you place them on your M&M coated stirrer.
Once they’re set sink each one into the center of each of your cupcakes. Sprinkle a few loose mini M&M’s onto the top of your cupcake and then carefully slide your cotton ball filled M&M bags over the end of each of your coated stirrers.
There you have it! Gravity Defying M&M Cupcakes! That’s how the magic happens! Pretty easy right? Now you just need some great cupcake recipes to choose from. Here are a few of my favorites!
