I’m always looking for fun new twists on some of my favorite treats. These Apple Pie Scream Cones combine Mom’s Perfect Pie Crust with my yummy Apple Pie Filling and Homemade Salted Caramel Sauce. And….of course…you can’t have Apple Pie without a big scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream!
These Pie Crust Cones are totally versatile so you can fill them with your favorite pie filling. I chose ApplePie because we always have a good old fashioned Apple Pie at our Thanksgiving Day dessert table and I thought it would be fun to give it a little up date.
I made Mom’s Perfect Pie Crust recipe but you can use whatever recipe you like or even a store bought crust.
One Pie crust should make about 6 cones.
The easiest way to make your cone shape is to use sugar cones wrapped in aluminum foil.
Start but cutting three 8 inch square aluminum foil sheets in half diagonally so you end up with 6 triangles.
Place your cone on one of the triangle sheets with the tip of the cone lined up with the tip of the triangle.
Wrap the cone tightly with the foil.
Tuck the excess foil at the top into the cone.
Make sure the foil is fitted tightly over the cone.
Repeat with all 6 cones. Then line them up on a cookie sheet and spray with cooking spray.
If you’re using store bought crust take it out of the fridge, unroll it and let it sit out for a bit to warm up.
If you have a pizza cutter great if not just use a small sharp knife to cut 1/2 inch strips.
Brush each strip with an egg wash using a pastry brush. I couldn’t find mine so I had to substitute a smaller brush so whatever you have that works. The egg wash acts as a glue and helps your pie crust pieces stick together. It will also give your cones a nice shiny coat after baking.
Take one pie crust strip and begin wrapping your cone from the tip down slightly overlapping the pieces until you get to the bottom. You may need to add more egg wash as you go.
Repeat with all 6 cones then lie them down on their sides on a parchment lined cookie sheet. I also sprinkled the tops of the cones with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar but that’s optional.
Place your wrapped cones in the fridge and chill for 30 minutes to overnight. This will help prevent the crust from drooping while it’s baking.
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. and bake your cones for 15-20 minutes. Remove your cones from the oven and let cool for a minute then carefully slide them off of their cone form. Let them cool completely on a cooling rack.
Recipe for cones was adapted from Wilton’s Pie Crust Cone Youtube video.
Once your Pie Crust Cones are cooled fill them with your Apple Pie Filling.
Then top your Pie Crust Cone with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and finish it by drizzling it with some Homemade Salted Caramel Sauce.
